Welch Ekes out Victory.
Don Welch, of Mineral Wells, won the Hells Gate Bass Clubs April Tournament. Welch who has been a HGBC member for over 20 years, said the 25-30 mph winds which picked up velocity as the day progressed making fishing a challenge. He fished the sheltered areas of protected coves. Welch continued that he caught a lot of short fish including a number of stripers. Another factor making catching tough was the number of boats on the lake, 4 other tournaments were conducted on P.K. on the same Sunday. Several fish from winning strings were caught flipping submerged tumble weeds in the mid lake area. Welch managed to amass 5 fish totaling 12.90 lb, Steve McCain weighed in 5 fish for 11.93 lb and recent Texas Tech graduate Coleman Crook gathered together 4 fish tipping the scale at 11.08 lb. Tony Wallace snagged the 4th spot and Big Bass of 7.94 lb, while Barry Smith navigated into the 5th hole. Grahams Pal Newsome won the free entry into next month’s tournament.
In the Year to Date Tournament Steve McCain and Bobby Koncak swapped places after McCain’s 2nd place finish, Barry Smith held on to his 3rd place, Mike Hallford remained in 4th, while winner Welch vaulted Johnny Hicks into the top 5. Hallford’ 8.44 lb March catch remains Big Bass for the year. The May tournament to be fished on P.K. will also decide the Tournament of Champions Winner for 2014 as well as the Champion of the Top 10 from 2014. The tournament will be fished on the 17th from 6.00 am to 3.00 pm with the weigh in being at Public Boat Ramp #1 at The Harbor.
