Smith captures title.
Hells Gate Bass Club fished its final tournament for the year on Possum Kingdom Lake December 21st under cloudy skies with a stiff wind out of the south. Barry Smith mastered the elements and not only took first place but overtook Steve McCain as the year’s top angler. Smith’s 18.35 lb included the 6.47 lb Big Bass for the tournament, Bobby Koncak took 2nd place with a respectable 11.94 and local guide Mike Hallford netted the 3rd spot. Bud Boenisch and Steve McCain rounded out the top five. Ric Hayward won free entry into the January Tournament. In all 17 fish were weighed totaling 47.37 lb.
Smith bettered McCain by a meager 10 points to capture the top anger crown, the slimmest of margins over the course of 13 tournaments throughout the year. Bobby Koncak secured the 3rd spot while Mineral Wells Johnny Hicks motored into 4th and Hallford jumped several places to take 5th. Don Welch, who did not fish in December, slipped to 6th place. Bruce Ray, Bud Boenisch, Tony Wallace and Eddie McCracken completed the top 10 and will fish in Mays Tournament for all the marbles. Tony Wallace’s 9.18 lber from the March Tournament held on to be the Big Bass for the year.
The monthly champions will also fish in May for the Tournament of Champions crown, along with Smith (4), and McCain (4), other monthly winners were Tony Wallace, Johnny Hicks, Don Welch (2) and Bobby Koncak.
The awards banquet will be held January 16th.
